Michigan-based Smart Disc, Inc. received a Notice of Allowance from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for U.S. patent application number 10/838,515, covering the company's artificial disc technology. The device can be implanted using a posterior approach and is "intended to maintain the normal [intervertebral] movement."

minSURG Corporation received a Notice of Allowance from the United States Patent and Trademark Office regarding the company's TruFUSE dowels and a Surgical Drill Guide. Once these patents are issued, they will protect the products through 2022. Still pending are six additional patent applications related to the TruFUSE product.

Arthro Kinetics has completed in-vitro and safety testing for its collagen matrix nucleus replacement product and will initiate pre-clinical studies for the device in 2H:08. The company is planning to start human studies in 2009. The company will also begin a human study on a second product, an annulus closure device described as very complimentary to the nucleus replacement product, in 2009.

Smith & Nephew appointed Joseph C. Papa as a Non-Executive Director to the Board. Mr. Papa is Chairman of Perrigo Company, which develops, manufactures and distributes over-the-counter and prescription pharmaceuticals, nutritional products, active pharmaceutical ingredients and consumer products. In the past he has held senior management positions with Cardinal Health, Watson Pharmaceuticals, G.D. Searle and Novartis.
