"Scorecard" for Device Markets Forthcoming from PWC BY LAUREN UZDIENSKI, MAY 12, 2010

PricewaterhouseCoopers announced that they're working on an "independent study of international market conditions for medical device innovation" in the key markets of Brazil, China, France, Germany, Israel, India, Japan, United Kingdom and the United States.

PWC will score each region's device climate based on regulatory policy, patient access to technologies, demographics (including patient info, like disease incidence, and workforce data) and "market factors," which are defined as public and private investment, R&D spend, relationships between industry and academic institutions and the "historical track record of medical technology in the market." The firm describes the scorecard as the first system of its kind and says it's designed not only to provide intelligence to companies and investors, but to educate government officials and agencies on patient access and fostering both economic and product development.

AdvaMed put out a press release praising PWC for the undertaking, with Stephen Ubl anticipating that the report will provide regional insight to device developers as well as "stimulate countries to improve the overall climate for medical technology companies and continued innovation."

pwc.gifAn update on the study was provided last week at the International Medical Device Industry Compliance Congress in Berlin, and the full report is expected to be released later this year.
