A study published this week in JBJS found a link between the severity of OA symptoms and depression. The authors found that patients reporting severe pain were more likely to be depressed, and this was particularly true of patients with less-severe disease. The Medicare claims database has been closed since 1979, when the Florida Medical Association and the American Medical Association persuaded a court to keep doctors' pay private. Now two Senators, Charles Grassley and Democrat Ron Wyden of Oregon, are working on legislation that would allow the public access to the database, which contains records of physician claims and reimbursement amounts. more
