Medtronic to Cut Another 25% from Production Costs BY LAUREN UZDIENSKI, NOVEMBER 29, 2011

Seeking to improve efficiency and make the company more competitive in emerging markets, Medtronic CEO Omar Ishrak plans to reduce cost-of-goods-sold by 25% over the next five years. This announcement comes in the last year of a prior five-year program to lower product costs, which has saved the company around $1 billion. more

Congress Goes Back to the Drawing Board on CMS Pay Cuts BY LAUREN UZDIENSKI, NOVEMBER 23, 2011

On Monday the Congressional supercommittee dedicated to deficit reduction announced that their latest efforts have failed, and they would not reach an agreement by their Wednesday deadline. The committee convened to find an alternative to $1.2 trillion in budget cuts mandated by the 2013 federal budget, much of which would come from the Pentagon. However, these cuts include a scheduled 2% decrease to Medicare physician pay every year from 2013 to 2021. more

Medtronic Reports Better-than-Expected Spine Sales BY LAUREN UZDIENSKI, NOVEMBER 22, 2011

Medtronic announced sales from its second fiscal quarter this morning, and spine's performance was generally better than most analysts anticipated. Spine sales declined by 3% on a constant currency basis to $839 million. Core Spinal contributed $631 million and declined by 3% during the quarter, while biologics contributed $208 million and declined by 4% during the quarter. more

Geron Ends Embryonic Stem Cell Research Program BY LAUREN UZDIENSKI, NOVEMBER 17, 2011

Geron announced this week that the company would end its research into stem cells and focus instead on its novel cancer agents. The company is notable for being the first to initiate an embryonic stem cell research program in the U.S., led by an investigational product for repairing damage to the spinal cord. The company attributed the decision to shutter the stem-cell program to "capital scarcity and uncertain economic conditions." more

Device Tax Repeal Gaining Momentum as Affordable Care Act Inches Closer to Supreme Court BY SANDER DUNCAN, NOVEMBER 11, 2011

A movement to repeal the medical device tax is gaining momentum in Congress, even as the Affordable Care Act as a whole is upheld by a federal appeals court in Washington DC. The landmark healthcare legislation is slated to include a 2.3% tax on medical device company revenues, but a bill opposing this tax now has the minimum number of votes to pass in the House. more

EU Begins "In-Depth" Antitrust Review for JNJ, Synthes BY LAUREN UZDIENSKI, NOVEMBER 8, 2011

The European Commission announced on Friday that they would begin an "in-depth" antitrust review of JNJ's proposed acquisition of Synthes. Regulators will determine if the $21B transaction reduces competition in the EU. A particular concern is spine, since the combined companies would have about 30% of the market, just behind Medtronic. more
