CBO: Supreme Court Ruling to Lower Costs of Health Reform While Expanding Coverage BY LAUREN UZDIENSKI, JULY 31, 2012

Last month, the Supreme Court largely upheld healthcare reform legislation, striking only one relatively small provision regarding state funding of the Medicaid program. Medicaid expansion was one way that President Obama's healthcare reform legislation was expected to insure 30 million of the 50 million uninsured lives in the U.S., but the Court ruled that states could opt out of this program, raising questions about how this would affect projections for newly-insured patients. more

Report: Medtronic Weighing Indian Investment BY LAUREN UZDIENSKI, JULY 24, 2012

MedCity News reported that Medtronic is reportedly in talks to make an investment in Chennai, India-based Trivitron Healthcare. The report follows last year's comments from Medtronic CEO Omar Ishrak that India was Medtronic's "biggest hole" and a geography in which the company was actively trying to invest. more

U.S. News and World Report released their annual list of the best orthopedic hospitals last week, and, as usual, New York City's Hospital for Special Surgery topped the list. Rounding out the top five were the Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Massachusetts General Hospital and Johns Hopkins. more

"Reshoring" May Bring Manufacturing Back to the U.S. BY LAUREN UZDIENSKI, JULY 18, 2012

A new survey conducted by an MIT professor indicated that U.S. companies may be looking to bring offshore manufacturing jobs back to the U.S. in a process known as "reshoring." According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, companies cited a number of factors in their reshoring efforts, including a desire to get products to market faster and respond rapidly to customer orders, savings from reduced transportation and warehousing, improved quality and protection of intellectual property. more

Orthopedic Device Patterns Among Medicare Beneficiaries BY LAUREN UZDIENSKI, JULY 16, 2012

Responding to a request from Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) provided a summary of implantable medical device trends among Medicare beneficiaries. The GAO found that about 1.6 million implantable device procedures were performed on Medicare patients in 2009, totaling about $20 billion in costs. Orthopedic and cardiac implantations were the most common device procedures, accounting for nearly all implantable-device-related Medicare spending in that year. This trend should continue as Medicare patients live longer and innovative devices enter the market. more
