Globus Medical to Acquire Excelsius Surgical BY ANDREW VAHRADIAN, JANUARY 9, 2014

Globus Medical entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Excelsius Surgical, a company developing a novel surgical robotic positioning platform for the spine, brain and musculoskeletal markets. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, however analysts estimate the transaction price to be less than $30 million.

Excelsius Surgical's system integrates intra-operative digital 3-D imaging with a sophisticated robotic surgical assistant that can be utilized as a surgical aid for navigating and facilitating surgical access, implant sizing, positioning and placement. The system has been designed to help enable surgeons to perform minimally invasive procedures more quickly and with greater accuracy, safety and reproducibility, by maintaining anatomical positioning during surgery with sub-millimeter accuracy. Additionally, the system aims to minimize tissue disruption, blood loss and surgical complication rates, as well as decrease the duration of exposure of fluoroscopy (radiation) experienced by patients, surgeons and operating room personnel.

For Globus, analysts believe that the transaction has the potential to serve as a catalyst for greater penetration of minimally invasive techniques and approaches by a wider segment of the surgical community, where adoption has been hindered in recent times due to technical complexities and reduced visualization options associated with conventional MIS instruments and technologies.

Globus expects to achieve FDA clearance for the robotic system in 2015, with commercial sales of the platform anticipated to reach the market in 2016.
